PHP Video Tutorial - The Basics Part 1
June 11th, 2007 by Justin CarmonyThere are hundreds, if not thousands, of written tutorials for PHP on the internet. However, we thought we would try something out. We wanted to try something different with two twists: First, make a video instead of a written document. Gamers are much more visual, and we thought this would help. Second, apply it a little more to gamers. Try to gear the terminology, examples, etc. to gamers. Hopefully you will enjoy these videos. You can view them with a flash video viewer.
Topics Covered
- Brief Introduction
- Basic Syntax
- Fixing Errors
- Variables
- Strings (a type of variables)

Watch the Videos
1) Brief Introduction
Quick run down on what you need to know before hand, what you need to have already done, and what you’ll need. You need to know a little bit about HTML/XHTML. You don’t need a whole lot, but if you don’t know anything check out W3School’s HTML Tutorials. You’ll learn enough to get started with our tutorials. You will need to have installed XAMPP or have access to an test web server. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, then follow this tutorial on how to install XAMPP on your PC, which will allow you to run php websites right off from your PC. We will be using Notepad2 to do all of our scripting in these tutorials, which is free to down load and use.
2) Basic Syntax
Learn how to speak in “PHP.” You will see how to make PHP files that your computer can read and execute to make dynamic websites. We start off really basic, but the farther and farther along in the series we get, the more advanced our examples will be.
3) Fixing Errors
Many sites lack tutorials on how to fix errors. Since beginners get a LOT of errors at the beginning since they are new to all the new little rules like semi-colons, dollar signs, etc. It is important to understand the basics for tracking down an error and fixing it. Hopefully we’ll help you find and fix errors in your syntax in seconds, not hours.
4) Variables
Variables is one of the core parts of PHP, as in all other languages. Learn the rules about variables, and also good programming standards for making and naming variables.
5) Strings
Learn how to use words, sentences, and large sections of text in your code.
6) Operators
Learn how in PHP to do all your standard arithmetic (add, subtract, multiply, divide), short cuts to do these operations (actions) quicker, and learn how to compare variables against each other.
7) Challenges
Take the lessons learned in these videos and apply them in real-word examples. Hopefully they’ll help you understand how to use and apply PHP code a little better.

Excellent - thanks! Personally, I like the extra degree of continuity better
than I like looking like another Yahoo customer.

My doctor suggested 3 more weeks taxi assistant to travel to work. However, my insurance company refuses to cover me for these 3 weeks until the doctor
provides further information. Do you think that taking public transport is a wise option for me just after taking moon boot off? I feel my left tendon is
very tightened and cannot raise myself using left foot.
