In an exciting first day of competition we had some foreseeable results as well as some unexpected results.  The day started off with the CGS Dallas Venom fresh off of their stellar performance in the CGS season.  They matched up against X30.  Dallas was able to start the match off strong and they never let up.  They finished their first match with a score of 13-6.  This would set the stage for a Dallas Venom versus the #1 seed zomblerz.

The next match had the Carolina Core facing off against Devastation.  The Carolina Core was missing one of their top fraggers in sonny but were able to use “America’s Ringer” Hostile, who really stepped up and performed extremely well.  Many people expected Carolina to walk away with this one but it was anyone’s game as it went all the way to the final round in overtime before we had a winner.  The Carolina Core allowed Devastation to come back from a first half deficit and force an overtime.  Then Devastion came out swinging in the first half of OT.  They were able to take 4 out of the 5 rounds and it looked as if the match was theirs.  The Core were not going to go down like that and were able to rebound in the second half and win 5-0 and take the match and move on to face the 94’ Knicks in the second round of the upper bracket.

Carolina Core > Devastation 18-16

The stage for the second round of the upper bracket was now set and the Dallas Venom and Zomblerz joined the server to square off.  This was one of the most anticipated matches of the playoffs but unfortunately for the zomblerz it did not live up to the hype.  The Venom again took control very early and did not let up. The fragging of Mustang led the way to the Venom 13-8 victory.  This placed the Dallas Venom in the Upper Bracket finals while the number one seed zomblerz were headed for the lower bracket and now in a do or die situation for their tournament life.

The final upper bracket match of the day was next where the Carolina Core faced off against the 94’ Knicks.  After the Core’s performance in the first match of the day this really looked to be anyone’s game as they had to face a higher seed in this match.  This time however, Devour and Daff were monsters and led their team to a resounding 13-5 victory.  This would set the stage for the two CGS franchises to face off in the Upper bracket finals on Sunday.

Carolina Core > 94′ Knicks 13-5

The final match of the day was in the lower bracket where the Zomblerz and Devastation faced off.  The opening of the first half looked to be all the Devastion but the Zomblerz were able to rally back and tie it at the half.  The second half started off as a back and forth battle but thanks to some big fragging by heatwave and complete lack of fragging from Pham the game quickly started moving in the favor of Devastation once again.  The Zomblerz would not go down quietly and were able to battle back to within one round of over time but Devastation was able to close it out in the final round of the game for a 13-11 victory.

Devastation > Zomblerz 13-11

Overall it was a very exciting first day.  Right now it really looks like it is the Dallas Venom in the Driver’s seat.  The Carolina Core really did step up in their final match.  So this should make for a great upper bracket final tomorrow.  Even though they are not in the upper bracket I would not count out Devastation as they have played both matches very closely and the match with Core could have gone either way.  Tune in to www.cevo.com tomorrow for full event coverage tomorrow.
