Team Fortress 2 Strategy - The Heavy

November 25th, 2007 by Graham Clay

Overview:

The Heavy of Team Fortress Two can be a valuable asset to any team, depending on the level and corresponding situation. Labeled as a ‘defensive’ class, the Heavy has the most hit points of any class in the game along with a huge, rotating machine gun. These hit points and the raking fire from the machine gun make the Heavy a force to be reckoned with. Although it is labeled as a ‘defensive’ class, the Heavy can also be used on offense to penetrate entrenched enemy defenses.

Weapons

Minigun – The Heavy’s primary weapon is a huge machine gun that is able to fire constantly until its 200 rounds of ammo run out. It is especially useful for fighting tightly-bunched groups of enemies, nearby enemies, and can handle the quickest Scout. When the right mouse button is pressed, the Heavy lowers this gun and it begins rotating without firing a round. This is useful for when the Heavy is coming around corners or expecting enemies to arrive suddenly. With a press of the left mouse button, the gun begins firing automatically. The only downside of this technique, as opposed to only using the left mouse button, is that when the Heavy’s gun is lowered, he moves even slower than his normal speed.

Shotgun – The Heavy’s secondary weapon is a shotgun. This shotgun is useful for fighting enemies when the Minigun is out of ammo or when fighting an incredible scout. Unlike the Minigun, the shotgun does not slow down the Heavy and allows him to quickly adjust to changes in battle.

Fists – The Heavy’s melee weapon is his fists. They are useful for close range combat when all else is lost and pride-fighting. The uppercut is especially dangerous and can knockout most opponents.

Strategies

1) Since the Heavy is typically accompanied by a Medic, it is very important to pay attention to the Medic and his location. A good Heavy protects his Medic by using his body like a meatshield and by watching for any enemies behind them.

2) If it is at all possible, a Heavy should try to stay out of open areas. Although the Heavy is the class with the most health in the game, a Sniper can still kill a Heavy with one shot to the head. For example, if a Heavy is attacking point B on cp_gravelpit, he needs to get inside quickly and then open up fire with his Minigun.

3) When a Heavy is ubered, it is vital that he takes out the most important targets first. These targets include, but are not limited to, the following: enemy sentry guns, enemy dispensers, enemy Medics, enemy Pyros, enemy Demomen and enemy Heavies. With these targets down, the penetration of an enemy strong point is much easier.

4) Lastly, a Heavy needs to pay attention to ammo box locations. Since the Minigun uses so much ammo, it is easy to run out of ammo in the heat of battle and be left like a fish out of water.

Let me know if I missed anything on this seemingly simple class. I realize there are minute details that I left out, but this is a ‘basic’ guide to the Heavy.

Heavies are a big lump of handicap without medics so don’t even try it. The heavy-medic strategy is simple… Camp and charge then rush, penetrate, and spray.

  2. Mark 'applesauce' Smith Says:

How about that the machine gun can spam through wooden walls.

  3. Julio 'JuLiO' Quiroz Says:

Pretty good, but I’d never use the heavy

-You are right, reasoN, a Heavy is very weak without a Medic. My first strategy is listed first because it is so important. With the Medic dead, the Heavy is soon to be toast.

-Very true, applesauce, the Minigun can spam through wooden walls while the Heavy is still protected. Thank you for mentioning this.

-I am sorry to hear that, JuliO. You should try it in a variety of situations…maybe you will discover that it can be useful at times.

A tactic I like to use with Heavy (currently my most used class followed by Medic) is to leap around corners, spinning the barrel as I leap. This allows the heavy to keep his walking speed while preparing the gun to fire. This works surprisingly well, even without a medic.

Additionally, a heavy should optimally be provided some longer-range support from a soldier to discourage snipers from blowing the heavy’s brains out.

Also if you are a heavy and you keep firing, walk over the weapons of your dead enemies. this’l give the minigun more bullets

It has been 2 long weeks since I had my surgery and I can honestly say that the sequence of events that immediately followed it, have been interesting to say

the least. Immediately after the procedure, while I was still in the hospital, I experienced chest pains and had to be monitored closely.
