Good post. You make some great points that most people do not fully understand.

" Let’s break that down into two parts: First, a good strat is a clear plan of action. It is clear in the sense that the end goal and secondary “back-up” plans are in place. This means players know their parts and know what to do in case things change. This is especially important with more risky/aggressive strats, because if you wrongly predict your opponents’ moves, the seconds transitioning from Plan A to Plan B can make the difference between winning and losing. A well planned strat has zero confusion as to different possibilities. Many times I’ve seen a Plan B executed just as well as a Plan A due to proper preparation. Other times I’ve seen a team just fall apart because one thing went wrong and left them in confusion.

The second part is the “why” of a strat. I believe this is most overlooked aspect of strat calling. In game you might tell players to do specific actions, but if you or your players don’t know the “why” behind the “what” then they don’t know the end goal to gain the advantage. A strat without a clear purpose isn’t nearly effective as one with a purpose. The power of an effective strat is that it is designed with clear goals in mind. Once I heard a professional player say after winning a championship that “every single action of each of [their] strats [had] specific purposes for taking the advantage. Every flash, every [grenade], down to every movement is designed and engineered to give [them] the advantage.”"

I like how you explained that. Very helpful. Thanks.

I think motivation and maturity plays a major role in the outcome of a match. If a team is loosing they start focusing on how "bad or bs the other team is" and not on how to improve their strats and game and ultimatly come back. On the other hand, when a team is up a few rounds they often get too relaxed and start "pubbing" a match, dont underestimate your opponents and also respect them. When your down, instead of running your mouth, motivate your team and get them to come back, when your winning instead of running your mouth continue to have tight strats and motivate both teams with a gh,gg,nt whatever. If your good teams will notice and will know, you dont have to tell them and put them down. Great read keep up the good work guys! VVa||y

Burned,
I know the feeling at its a hard thing. I'm actually currently working on a new article on overcoming defeat and keeping motivated. So check out the site within the next week or so and it should be up.

I am a new strat caller for my team and i read all of this. The thing is, how can i keep my team motivated once we are down a couple of rounds. It seems, when we start loosing we keep losing and it keeps going downhill.. Maybe this is my fault for calling bad strats though?

As a 5+ year experienced strat caller, all I gotta say is this :
this "thread" would be useful for the seasons prior to these ones, fore the case we are handling now is a lot different. People, now a days, do not even know what dry-running strategies are and when they do they, they are impatient to even sit in a server for 3 minutes and do it.
It's all due to the younger population getting involved into counter-strike. I mean people think 16 is old now.. it's retarded.
A few days ago, I read this in an IRC channel : two ringers - not very annoying - we're mature [13 years old]..
and I wondered, how the FUCK did he purchase counter-strike? isn't it a rated M game? Anyhow, good luck with your next articles, this one was very nice :)

@PooLarX
I totally agree there is a maturity issue, but I would say this is mostly effected with pugs & scrims. However, when it comes to matches, I've seem teams who claim "cevo-m/cal-m" caliber get rocked by CEVO-a teams that out played them.

There is one player who will go unnamed who seems every season to have a new CEVO-m Caliber team that "deserves" to be in CEVO-M because they are all made up of ex-CAL-M players. Well of course with no actual experience we put them in IM, and at least once or twice a season they dispute another team with their evidence that: "We're too good of a team to loose to cal-o nobodies."

The fact is, being humiliated by a team because they out strat'ed you can be embarrassing, especially with an upset. Many times a match is determined no by amazing shots but my which team made more mistakes.

I would hope the CS 1.6 community would shape up, but perhaps their living their "golden years" and too stubborn to change while the rest of the gaming community is still growing up. Only time will tell.

Sorry, I just realized that your comments were awaiting approval. I guess the new settings on the anti-spam (which is terrible) is really strict. I'm going to see if we can't lower it. :)
